One day in 1961, a couple of years after the revolution that toppled Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara went to play a game of golf. They showed up at the Country Club, which was Havana’s most aristocratic golf club, in their army fatigues, and there are photos of them, in scraggly beards and military boots, trying to putt in the awkward stances of beginners.

Castro had a brainstorm during the game: to turn the bourgeois golf course into a cultural centre for the Cuban people. He would commission architects to build the best art schools in the world. It was part of what someone in the documentary Unfinished Spaces calls “a great guerrilla spirit of adventure,” and…

Repeating Islands

Julie Miller writes about Havana’s Art Festival in this article for Australia’s news.com.au.

THERE’S a ruckus on the corner near Havana’s Parque Central.

Curious onlookers line the footpath, children clambering on to walls for a tippy-toe view; while a lone motorcycle policeman rides up and down the deserted Prado in uniformed officiousness, siren blaring.

We see placards, hear chanting then drums, the hypnotic Afro-Cuban beat so essential in Cuba’s soundscape. Suddenly we’re engulfed in a parade, a bipedal flotilla of fantasy creatures adorned in body paint, whirling and gyrating to the timbal pulse. Some wear masks, blue and ochre phalluses covered in dots; while centre-stage is a Christ-like figure, struggling under the weight of a crossbar.

It’s then we notice the various stages of nudity; bare chests and buttocks, g-strings and loincloths offering scant protection. Two masked entities approach a young mother cradling a newborn, running their hands over the…

February 16, 2013 – Another February 14th Meteor Report –
This One Over Cuba.

Before the big space rock exploded with the force of 300 TNT kilotons and crashed into central Russia at 9:20 PM local time on February 14 (3:20 AM GMT),  another fireball was videotaped over Rodas near Cienfuegos, Cuba, around 8 PM local time (1 AM GMT), six thousand miles from the exploded meteor impact sites in Chelyabinsk east of the Ural Mountains. Rodos residents described a roaring sound in the sky and a moving bright light that exploded and shook some houses, but no damage or injuries were reported. Cuban media report that scientists are trying to find pieces of that explosion.  Click for Cuba meteor video.

Rodas and Cienfuegos, Cuba (purple map marker) is southeast of Havana and 6,000 miles from Chelyabinsk, Russia, where the large meteor exploded two hours after this video

Midday Cowboy

I’ve spent the last month trying to put my finger on what exactly made Cuba so bewitching to me as a photographer.  All I’ve been able to come up with so far is that the mix of colors as well as the mix of styles is absolutely unique, and the mix of the mix, if you will, is alluring as can be.  The buildings, cars and people all have a certain “je ne sais quoi,” and when you put them all together they form a gestalt, which simply means that the whole is more than the sum of the parts.

This image is a great example.  It’s just “a man standing next to his car parked on a busy street in Havana.”  The description sounds pretty mundane.  And yet the color and styling of the green car, and the man standing in front of it wearing bright yellow shorts AND…
