One day in 1961, a couple of years after the revolution that toppled Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara went to play a game of golf. They showed up at the Country Club, which was Havana’s most aristocratic golf club, in their army fatigues, and there are photos of them, in scraggly beards and military boots, trying to putt in the awkward stances of beginners.
Castro had a brainstorm during the game: to turn the bourgeois golf course into a cultural centre for the Cuban people. He would commission architects to build the best art schools in the world.
